Designing the Perfect Family Cooking Station

Many people consider their kitchen to be the heart of their family home. A place where you can all congregate to eat, drink, cook and socialise.

If you have a young family, or are planning to start one, then it is important that your kitchen is prepared for it. There are a number of things to consider when creating a family-friendly kitchen, from safety features to functionality, layout and design. Here are a few little tips we have to get you started:

Durable materials
With growing families you need to make sure you choose the most durable and strong materials possible. Here at Solutions we will guide you in getting the strongest and most suitable Kitchen for a busy family.

Go Open Plan
Cooking for a family is a bigger job than many people give credit for. One of the most useful layouts that a family kitchen can have is a conjoined kitchen and family room. Essentially, this means that whoever is preparing your family meal can still be a part of the family conversation and keep an eye of youngsters easily. As children are growing up, it can be hard to spend as much quality time with them as you may like, an open plan kitchen can help with this.

Get sociable with an Island
For families we recommend a kitchen island, which allows children to sit in the kitchen while adults are preparing meals. They can make a kitchen much more functional, allowing to move around it easier whilst spending time with the children while you cook. An Island also provides a space for children to complete any homework. As we all know, children can be easily distracted and may need some guidance with their homework, so an Island is the perfect way for you to keep an eye on them.

Safety first
If your children are very young then safety will be at the forefront of your mind when it comes to kitchens. Preventing children injuring themselves on sharp corners is fundamental. If there are any sharp corners in your kitchen then you could purchase a ‘bumper’ to cover them. For a neater finish to your kitchen, you can round off the corners of your counters. This is a service provided by us here at Solutions. We can design attractive edge profiles that are consistent throughout the room so that your children are safer and your kitchen looks completely modern at the same time. It’s also advised that you install child locks on the cupboards to prevent little ones coming across dangerous objects or foods.
